TROPICAL INSTITUTE OF ECOLOGICAL SCIENCES (TIES)
Tropical Institute of Ecological Sciences (TIES) is an environmental research organization of college/university teachers and researchers, based at Kottayam.
TIES stands for MAN and NATURE through education and practice: a synergy of science, tradition and environment.
TIES works to generate and disseminate knowledge on environment, to develop skill and right attitudes for meeting the present and future environmental challenges and to create an environmentally responsible community who honor and practice its values and traditions through interdisciplinary and participatory research coupled with education and outreach programmes.
TIES was established in 2004 to conduct research programmes on national and global environmental issues that have impact upon local ecology and culture. TIES has network with universities, research institutions, colleges and schools in Kerala.
TIES is a registered non-profitable charitable organization under the Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific Charitable Societies Act, 1955 with 12A and 80G status as per Indian Income Tax Act, 1961 and registered with the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India to receive foreign contributions (FCRA). TIES is a recognized research centre of Mahatma Gandhi University.
TIES has been conducting research projects on biodiversity conservation and management, wildlife resources, ecosystem management, ethnobiological studies, waste management, emerging epidemics and public health issues, pollution and toxicological studies. Training for capacity building and skill development for stakeholder groups and awareness programmes for students and public are also in the schedule to create a sustainable society. Production of documentary films and information pamphlets, publication of books and conduct of several other outreach programmes are carried out.

MACFAST is a post graduate teaching and research institution of Mahatma Gandhi University of Kerala. The campus is located in Tiruvalla, amidst lush green surroundings near Kottayam. The division of Bioscience consists of departments like plant biotechnology, phytomedical sciences, bioinformatics, biochemistry and nutrition technology are famous among Kerala students to seek for degrees of immense value. The extraordinary infrastructure, research laboratories and professors with cutting edge research provide academically challenging environment for these students.
The college has full fledged labs for Biotechnology, Plant Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Food Analysis, Biochemistry, Protein Chemistry, Enzymology and Microbiology as well as high throughput Computational Biology. The labs have state-of –the-art equipments like the thermal cycle for PCR, electrophoretic units, U.V and white trans illuminators, -20º freezer, gel documentation systems, electronic balances, shakers, laminar air flow hoods, fruit pulping machine, mixing tank, pasteurizer blanching chamber, vacuumetric liquid filling machine, crown corking machine, two- stage pulverizer, Elisa plate reader, fermentor, incubator- BOD incubator and shaking incubator, autoclave, high speed cooling centrifuge, -40º C deep freezer, O.V. spectrophotometer , constant and variable temperature water bath, vortex mixer and others.
The Herbal Garden of MACFAST serves the functions of education, research and conservation of germplasm of medicinal and aromatic plants, wild relatives of cultivated crops, dye- bearing plants and other species of ecological/ economic interests. The garden with nursery, pot culture and green house facility, at present, maintains over 400 indigenous medicinal plants, including rare and endangered species.
The Herbarium and Raw Drug Museum of MACFAST provides a reliable aid for identification of such plant resources apart from contributing to taxonomic research, both monographic and floristic. The facility also serves as a repository for type materials/ specimens in future. Resource processing facility, systematically arranged herbarium specimens/ sheets and catalogue are the highlights of this facility.
